Singapore

Year 1998, I arranged my accommodation via internet before I arrive to Singapore. I was going to accommodate in a hostel which back packers stay.

Hostel was a bit far to city center but I could walk every night trough the forest between city center to hostel. This country has the lowest crime percentage in the world. When I was there chewing gum was forbidden. The reason of this to keep clean the streets. If you chewing gum or eat something in the metro you can pay 500 Singapore dollar penalty.

But recently I heard that chewing gum import is not forbidden in Singapore any more.  Hostel mostly was for back packers but there is bath room and TV in my room. Some rooms were for 4-5 people and there was no bath room. If you want to organize your trip one day you can stay at the same hostel the web address is www.mymca.org.sg.

First day when we arrived to Singapore there was a interesting festival. A lot of people where on the street walking with sticks on their cheeks. There were no blood and they were no suffer, you could understand this from their face. Those days I wasn’t photographer therefore I don’t have photos of this moments.

Country has either Asian and European face.  In Singapore, Chinese, Malay and Indians are living together.  People who lives there they are all Asian but country is very European. I can’t say that Singapore as cheaper as Indonesia but I can say that it is a bit cheaper than Istanbul. Electronic devices are very cheap and you always have bargain chance. They are like Turkish people first they say high price than they make discount. I bought my first photo camera from Singapore I paid 300 USD in that times camera was 600 USD in Turkey. This gives you an idea.

I will recommend you to not come back before you go to night safari. Actually here is zoo but it is not a classic zoo. Some animals are walking around free and some of them are very close to you behind the electric wire. First you make round trip with small cars like golf cars. In some places some animals are coming near to you to snuff. Later you go to start point,  get a map and start walking in the jungle. It is real jungle because there is no light, you here some ferocious animal noises and this is frighten you. While you walk you, face to face with python, first you jump but then you realize thick glass between you and snake. This is maybe first and last time in your life, you can approach to Python this much closer.  A bit later you see crocodiles there is a ditch full with water and electric wire. If you want to try this safari www.nightsafari.com.sg.

If you want to walk in fairy tale you must see the Tang Dynasty City. You walk in the fairy house. After you watch a short movie about Mongolians, your armchair shakes with earthquake. You feel this very well and then rain starts you again feel it because water falls to your head.

In Singapore for me the most impressive thing was Terracotta Army. Originally in China and there you can see figurative of 8000 soldiers. First you go in to a dark room and suddenly lights turn on you see very huge army in front of you.  Before Emperor Shi Huang die around 3. Before Christ he found a different way do not bury he’s soldier together with him. He ordered statue of each soldier and he buried together with these statues. Today in Singapore you can see these perfect statues.

Especially you should see the Sentosa Island. You can reach the island via bus or cable car. If you ask me this island is just a dream island. A beach under Palm tree shadows, observation tower, dragon walking way, big statue of Merlion  (which is symbol of Singapore) and in the evenings with different night shows it is so fantastic. There is a big aquarium in the island you can see the aquarium on moving sidewalk while you walk in it a giant shark just passing in front of you. Beside you can touch some of the animals at the touch pool. I touched one small shark at touch pool it was so shy, soft skin and wanted to run away.

Indian temples are very interesting. Buildings are very decorative with many different colors. You should take off your shoes but you should be ready for the foods which will stick to your feet. You feel it smell of fumigations in everywhere, at the middle where everybody gathers there are big trays full with foods and everybody eats from there with their fingers instead of spoon.

The last thing you should do before you come back from Singapore to go “Orchard Road”. This is a center every ways goes there. You can buy many things from this big bazaar with bargain. You will find there many different materials for your self.

  1. Hi Zehra, the interesting festival (people walking with sticks on their cheeks) you witnessed is Thaipusam. It is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb).

  2. Hi Patrick,
thank you very much for given me this detail. I didn’t know the festival name.
