Bratislava

We went to Bratislava from Wien. It is so easy to go there from Wien. First of all you have to find a metro map. Then you have to come Sudbanhof and take a train after one hour you get of at another country’s border. The only think you should do is pay 14 € for the train.

Train starts from Wien in the morning at 05:28 am and continue until 23:58 pm. When you get off at the last station, to go old city you should walk street ahead and cross the bridge walk again 15 minutes. Slovakia is a country who had performed a fast renovation after the collapse of communism. In 1989 Czechoslovakia had detached from communist regime with a transition named “velvet revolution”. After that in 1-January-1993 Slovakia sings with Czechoslovakia velvet separation, left communist system became a republic and after that date develop very fast in 2004 they join EU. Today Bratislava with 450.000 population still capital of Slovakia. City had built to the side of Danube River and this city has a specialty which 2 cities has in the world. Bratislava has border from one side with Austria and from other side with Hungary.

While you walk to old city you will see a building which had build in 18th century, today this building use as chairman house. At the entrance of old city you will see Trinity Church in side of it fascinating. We couldn’t enter it because it was closed but we could see from the window how beautiful is inside. This church has been built instead of St. Michael Church which collapsed during Ottoman occupation. Building starts in 1717 but it finish’s in 1727. In side of it full blue color on the ceiling and on the walls you see beautiful fresco’s. After pass this church old city shows it self from a narrow gate. There is a small bridge which originally was wooden but in 1927 it rebuilt as concrete. After pass this gate you enter to old city from Michael’s Gate. This gate is one of the four gates which is still survived. Lower floors of the old buildings are looking very modern today they became a small cafes and restaurants with new furnished faces. While you try to discover city you face with an old and semi collapse house in front of very house. These houses are from the war time. You can understand what had happened in these houses. Some of them windows are close with brick or rock wool. One house has a big hole at the roof. You watch all this like you are walking at open air museum. Also I should say that even the collapsed houses have an aesthetic outlook. Bratislava has very good architecture aesthetic.

In the old city you realize a bronze statue looking at you from a manhole. This statue’s name is Cumil and smiling at you. A bit further in the small square you see Napoleon statue standing behind of the bank. Both statues have symbolic meanings. Cumil is there to explain rebuilt of Korzo “which means old city” in 1997 and Napoleon statue is there to remind occupation in 1805. In the side of square you can see very nice buildings with showing nice architectural characteristic.

At the middle a big pool and sides of the pool souvenir sellers in small booths. There are also small places to eat something. They use Slovak Crone as currency they also accept Euro but when they reverse from Crone to Euro they make a bit high calculation and you pay more then you have to. You should be careful about this.

If you continue to walking in the city center you see St. Martin Church. Unfortunately this church was open for the tourist for some hours we couldn’t see this church too. After you pass the church you see Novy Most Bridge it has very modern looking and it divide from each other new and old city. You may cross the bridge to see new city but it is not interesting as old city. To smell a bit old and to see the city bird’s eye view you have to go Bratislava Castle. By the way in the old city small cars which sides are open, they make city tours for the tourist it can be fun.

We had spent only a few hours at Bratislava I try to write here as much as possible. I would like to go there one more time and see the places which I couldn’t see. One day if your way passes from Wien or Budapest don’t forget to see Bratislava.
